I am currently working on a paper that focuses on the 2016 presidential election. I expect to have a draft ready to share within the next few weeks.
“Donald Trump’s Media Wall: The Conspicuous Absence of Mexican Voices During the 2016 Presidential Campaign”
Mexicans, and political commentary referring to Mexicans within the United States featured more prominently in the national media during the 2016 presidential campaign than any previous presidential campaign in recent memory.
This discursive prominence was overwhelmingly negative and derogatory; a direct result of the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, which consistently referred to Mexican-related issues as a central feature of his 2015-2016 presidential campaign. On the other hand, Mexican political commentary, media protagonists representative of a Mexican perspective, and/ or individuals speaking from the positionality of Mexican or Chicano communities within the United States, were conspicuously rare within English language media in general. This paper is a preliminary content analysis of presidential news coverage, focusing on the top three cable news channels in the United States – CNN, Fox News, MSNBC – in order to track the source and positionality of Mexican related commentary during the 2015-2016 presidential campaign.
